BBS I miss you

January 26th, 2010

The past couple of days I’ve been thinking about how awesome dial-up BBS systems used to be from  my youth. The local Madison ones like Screaming Demon II and Beeline to mention a couple. This was before the web came along and killed them. This was before DSL and cable modems and ISPs. This was when you had to know the phone number and dial into it with your trusty modem. I can totally remember worrying about the modem handshake waking up my parents and was overjoyed to have learned the AT commands to disable the speaker on my internal modem.

So tonight I would just like to give a warm shout-out to the BBS boards of my past. Without you I would have never gotten into computers.

President Obama selected for jury duty

January 25th, 2010

LOL I saw on the news tonight that President Barack Obama was selected for jury duty. He said he just wouldn’t be able to make it.

Something tells me they will most likely be adding a provision to remove presidents from the jury duty selection process while they are in office.

If it’s brown it’s down!

November 18th, 2009

I’m packed and ready to head to my parent’s house after work tomorrow for the night. Early Thursday morning we start the 4 hour drive to Minoqua  for the 2009 deer hunting season. This year a couple  thoughts cross my mind in anticipation of the season ahead.

First it will be much warmer, last year it was zero degrees which was not fun. While on stand in the morning we could actually hear the trees around us popping from the extreme cold. It didn’t matter how many ‘layers’ you had on it was bitterly cold.

Second from the forecast there most likely won’t be any snow. This has some good points and  bad points in my opinion.

The good:

  • Deer will be more active.
  • It’ll be easier to hear the deer on the move.
  • I won’t need to wear heavy boots to keep my feet warm and dry.
  • Won’t need to wear bulky clothes to stay warm.
  • Won’t need to wear gloves to keep my  hands warm which get in the way of pulling the trigger.

The bad:

  • Without the contrast of the snow the deer’s camouflage will work much better.
  • Tracking them without the snow will be much more challenging.
  • Ticks will be active still instead of going dormant for the winter.
  • Dragging a deer over snow is much easier then over bare ground.

I’m looking forward to this season and spending time with my dad and brother. I’m also looking forward to some time away from the office and to enjoy the great outdoors. Oh and let’s not forget the all you can eat fish fry at Fibber’s. Hopefully I’ll get one this year as last year was a little disappointing with the extreme cold and lack of getting a deer.

Wish me luck on the hunt of 2009!

Weigh-in Day 1

October 23rd, 2009

Hopped on the scale this morning to a pleasant surprise of a 5lb weight loss!

This past week I’ve focused on portion control, hydration and eating lots of fruits and vegetables. I haven’t even started to get back into the gym yet but hope to within the next week or two.

Last night I did have a little breakdown with a jar of salsa and some chips. I opened the jar and ended up eating the entire thing! Fortunetly it was organic salsa and the entire jar only ended up being 160 calories which is amazing. The chips are the bad part but I pile A LOT of salsa on each chip so actually I don’t really think I ate that many chips at all.

This weekend will prove to be challenging with the rainy weather and Lydia and I going out to eat.

It’s about time

A co-worker forwarded me a link to an article that pretty much says AT&T is losing the iPhone deal and Verizon will be getting access to it soon.

Here is the link to the article.

Mowing the lawn

October 20th, 2009

Me 001

Posted this just for fun. A while ago my mom sent me a birthday card with this picture of me taped inside of it. I got a big kick out of it and it was fun to see me so little. On another note I look entirely too happy to be ‘mowing’ the lawn. Little did I know then how much I would grow to despise mowing my own lawn.

Solitaire Challange

October 20th, 2009

SolitaireWow so tonight I started playing some Solitaire on my computer and realized it was damn near impossible to win using the draw 3 cards rules. I must have had too much time on my hands since I cleared the stats and decided I would play until I won. Well I finally won but can honestly say it wasn’t really all that much fun considering I had to play over 50 games to do so.

Now if only this energy could be harnessed for more productive uses

First Week of On-Call

October 19th, 2009

Came and went without much action too speak of. Only real issue I had to deal with was Saturday morning into Saturday afternoon for a customer in California. Cause of issue, power outage, time to actually get someone out there to fix it, 7+ hours. I pretty much just had to babysit this issue all day and was able to do so from my couch while watching T.V.

Part of me wishes my first week could have been a little more hectic and challenging so I could have gotten it out of the way. My first week was WAY too easy and totally not how it normally is from what I’ve heard from the other engineers here at work. Christmas will be my next time on-call so I guess I’ll see what that week holds in store for me.
