If it’s brown it’s down!
I’m packed and ready to head to my parent’s house after work tomorrow for the night. Early Thursday morning we start the 4 hour drive to Minoqua for the 2009 deer hunting season. This year a couple thoughts cross my mind in anticipation of the season ahead.
First it will be much warmer, last year it was zero degrees which was not fun. While on stand in the morning we could actually hear the trees around us popping from the extreme cold. It didn’t matter how many ‘layers’ you had on it was bitterly cold.
Second from the forecast there most likely won’t be any snow. This has some good points and bad points in my opinion.
The good:
- Deer will be more active.
- It’ll be easier to hear the deer on the move.
- I won’t need to wear heavy boots to keep my feet warm and dry.
- Won’t need to wear bulky clothes to stay warm.
- Won’t need to wear gloves to keep my hands warm which get in the way of pulling the trigger.
The bad:
- Without the contrast of the snow the deer’s camouflage will work much better.
- Tracking them without the snow will be much more challenging.
- Ticks will be active still instead of going dormant for the winter.
- Dragging a deer over snow is much easier then over bare ground.
I’m looking forward to this season and spending time with my dad and brother. I’m also looking forward to some time away from the office and to enjoy the great outdoors. Oh and let’s not forget the all you can eat fish fry at Fibber’s. Hopefully I’ll get one this year as last year was a little disappointing with the extreme cold and lack of getting a deer.
Wish me luck on the hunt of 2009!
